What Is The Mass?
Catholics believe that the first Mass was the Last Supper, when Jesus established the Eucharist to make His sacrifice on the Cross present to us throughout the ages. He ordained the apostles as His first priests, and they and their successors (bishops) have handed on this ordained ministry to every Catholic priest throughout history. At every Mass, Christ's sacrifice on the cross is made present to us sacramentally. Jesus becomes really and truly present to us -- Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity -- under the appearances of bread and wine. We recall His death and resurrection, and look forward to the time when we will share in the Wedding Feast of the Lamb in heaven. |
