RELIGION 8: Story of the Church
UNIT 7: Reformation and Counter-Reformation During the 16th Century, the Catholic Church was yet again torn asunder by debates over doctrine and authority. Abuses by members of the clergy along with poor education and the growing authority of the state combined to create the perfect storm for sweeping changes to the Church and society. While reformers like Martin Luther would ultimately find themselves pushing for change outside the Church, saints like Teresa of Avila and Robert Bellarmine worked to improve the Church from within. Unit 7 Combined Notes UNIT 6: The Holy Trinity
According to legend, Saint Augustine was walking along a beach one day -- contemplating the mystery of the Holy Trinity -- when he spotted a small child using a seashell to pour ocean water into a hole in the sand. The child explained that he was trying to pour the ocean into the hole. Augustine told the child that such a small hole in the sand could not possibly take in the entire ocean. The mysterious child looked up at Saint Augustine and told him that it was likewise impossible for a limited human mind to fully take in the immense mystery of the Holy Trinity. In this unit, we will -- using the tiny confines of our limited human intellects -- attempt to learn a few things that the Church teaches us about the Holy Trinity. We will also discuss heresies and misunderstandings related to our belief in one God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. About this Class:
What does the Catholic Church believe about itself and what is its role in the world today? What does it mean to be a member of the Church? This course will examine these and other questions, considering what Christ has revealed through Scripture and the Tradition of the Church. Our textbook is Blest Are We: The Story of the Church by RCL Benziger. We will also use the New American Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. ANIMA CHRISTI
Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, inebriate me. Water from the side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O Good Jesus, hear me. Within thy wounds, hide me. Separated from thee, let me never be. From the enemy, defend me. In the hour of my death, call me, And bid me come to thee, That with thy saints I may praise thee, Forever and ever. Amen. |
